Live Sound
I’ve spent 30 years as a live sound engineer at many venues in Boston, MA. Though most of my work happened without being recorded, here are some live performances I’ve captured over the years.
With experience working in recording studios, I got into live sound after making friends with people who worked in the clubs as part of my job managing the punk rock clothing store, Allston Beat. Bands and venues were eager to work with someone like myself who has good ears, an agreeable personality, is fast at what they do, and shows up on time. I enjoyed the fix-it-as-quick-as-you-can challenges of working in a live environment and the feeling of satisfaction I got when providing fans with a transformative concert experience. At my busiest, as the house sound engineer at the infamous Rat in Boston’s Kenmore Square, I was mixing about 1,000 different bands a year.

Live concert production systems I’ve worked with or taught about.

I worked at Boston venues including The Rat, Bill’s Bar, Paradise, The Middle East, Avalon, and Axis.
After 20 years mixing shows, I decided to record my favorite local bands in a 3-night event called Kraütfest while I was house sound engineer at The Linwood. I recorded and mixed Live Boston Rock to archive my time as a live sound engineer highlighting 11 of Boston’s best rock bands.

Vertical Horizon was a live concert I produced and mixed for RCA.
